October 9, 2009, Newsletter Issue #188: Different Styles of Power Wheelchairs

Tip of the Week

There are a few different types of power wheelchairs available for patients who need to use a wheelchair for mobility reasons.
The standard type of motorized (power) wheelchair can come in back, front or center wheel drive – with different types of wheel drive being better for maneuverability indoors or out. These chairs can be made in either standard sizes (supporting weight up to 250 pounds) or heavy duty, which can support 400 pounds or more.
Collapsible power wheelchairs can be folded or disassembled for easy portability and travel; these chairs are best for riders who need to be able to transport their wheelchairs from place to place. Patients and caregivers should be aware, however, that even the portable types of power wheelchairs have pieces that weigh upwards of 30 pounds.
The customizable power wheelchair can be configured to fit riders of different sizes and needs, with different wheel drives and alternative types of seats and support.
